How to Play, Play and Play: A Thursdate with Richard Branson

This week, we’re celebrating the art of play and its contribution to entrepreneurship.

Whether you’re a new or veteran entrepreneur, you can use play to spice up your work life. In keeping with this week’s theme, we gave you 5 ways to play at Storehouse

Now we’re teaching you how to play like, entrepreneur and the master of play himself, Sir Richard Branson.

Wait, who is Sir Richard Branson?

Here’s a quick biography for those who are new to the entrepreneurship space, pun intended. Don’t worry you’ll get it later. Sir Richard Branson is the Founder of the Virgin Group, a conglomerate of over 400 companies which includes, Virgin Mobile, Virgin Active, Virgin Australia, Virgin America, Virgin Holidays, Virgin Limited Edition, Virgin Trains, Virgin Hotels and Virgin Galactic. He started his entrepreneurship career at the age of 16 and the Virgin Group in the 1970’s. Today, Richard Branson is a master of play and a self-made multi-billionaire worth $5.1 billion (Forbes). Now that that’s out of the way, here are 6 ways to play your way to success like Richard Branson:

(1) Get your own go-to-play space

Richard Branson enjoys playing so much that he bought an island called Necker Island for $180 000 and he transformed it into a tropical play paradise. He uses this ‘go-to-play’ space to host regular treasure hunts, adventure games and festivals. Cool right?

If you can’t afford a private island of your own yet don’t worry, come create your ‘go-to-play’ space at a price you can afford, right here at Storehouse Midrand.

(2) Don’t be afraid to fall flat on your face (or back)

Richard Branson has had his fair share of ups and downs, both in work and play; he (like us) believes that failure is one of the secrets to success. He embraces his failures and uses them to inform his next move. As a big fanatic of water sports like swimming, kitesurfing and boat riding, falling and getting right back up comes naturally to him.

If you, like Richard Branson, enjoy water and outdoor sports activities you probably have too much extra sports equipment and not enough space to store it in. Storehouse can help, we have space for your outdoor sports equipment such as boats and caravans.

(3) Go on an adventure or two and break a record

Branson has participated in and conquered many adventures; he holds a world record for the fastest ever Atlantic Ocean crossing, which he achieved in 1986. He also broke the record for crossing the Pacific from Japan to Arctic Canada at a speed of 394 km/h. Kitesurfing, speedboat riding, surfing, skydiving, hot air balloon rides, you name it, he's done it. Richard Branson works hard to play hard.

Social and online adventures

Apart from sports adventures, Branson has also conquered social media; he was voted the United Kingdom’s number one Twitter user and the world’s most social Chief Executive Officer. He is also the world’s most followed person on LinkedIn and has a daily blog where he writes about entrepreneurship, current events, travel, life experiences, business, humour and everything in-between.

(4) Bring your childhood dream to life

Richard Branson’s childhood dream was to travel to space, a dream that was influenced by watching the moon landings on television. He went on to register Virgin Galactic in 1999 with the aim of making space travel a reality. He then developed rocket-powered planes with the goal of transporting tourists to space through Virgin Galactic, the world’s first commercial space line. He describes space travel as the greatest adventure of all, and his future plans include launching Virgin Cruises in 2020.

What’s your childhood dream? To build a model aircraft? Restoring classic cars? Whatever it is you’ll find the right space to indulge yourself here at Storehouse. We have enough space for your interests and hobbies.

(5) Laugh at yourself and make others laugh

One of the many things we love about Branson is his ability to laugh at himself. He doesn’t take himself too seriously. He has had many embarrassing ‘play fails’ in the full stare of the media and he always finds a way to take the Mickey out of himself. You will have moments of embarrassment in life and how you respond to these is rooted in how much you play. Those who are used to playing are used to falling and getting right back up, and they have a great sense of humor about it so they easily take to laughing at themselves when they fall. Richard Branson’s playful nature, sense of humor and resilience make him the life of the party on and off the ground. Take a page out of his book and lighten up; laugh at yourself the next time you fall; just try it, you’ll probably love it.

(6) Do it like a pro and enjoy it

Whether it’s work or play, Richard Branson has proved himself to be a jack of all trades. He made his billions from a long list of different ventures, from music records, airplanes, trains, credit cards, gyms, alcohol, telecommunication, even space tourism. On the fun side, he has set and broken world records and mastered just about every outdoor sporting activity you can think of. The best part is, he handles his (work and playtime) ups and down like a pro. If there’s anything to learn from him, it has to be ‘how to enjoy your hard work’.

Why Richard Branson?

His playful and light-hearted nature makes him see challenges as fun pursuits and it helps him to successfully take on risky opportunities. He is not afraid of failing, in fact, Branson literally failed his way to success and his long list of failures include being a high school dropout. However, his list of failures is far outweighed by his accomplishments, like being the only person to build 8 successful billion dollar businesses in 8 different industries. At the age of 66, Richard Branson is still as playful and successful as he was in his younger years. He proves that entrepreneurship is more than just about working hard, it is also about playing hard. Richard Branson is a visionary, an innovator and an overall cool guy, that’s why we chose him for our Thursdate.

Why play?

Plato once said "You can discover more about a person in an hour of play than in a year of conversation." Play strengthens character and builds that ‘try it out’ and ‘do it yourself’ attitude that every entrepreneur needs in order to be successful.
